One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

The legalization of Cannabis in the US (16 states as of April 2021) was a huge step forward towards creating opportunities for better health and improved socioeconomic status. On the surface, this is a WIN for all entrepreneurial minded looking to launch a start-up in the space.

Not so fast though, as of 2019, only 1.8% of venture-backed Cannabis businesses owners were LatinX-owned and a paltry 1% Black-owned (nymag.com, April 2021). As with most things rooted in capitalism, this booming industry is dominated by white-owned, big business with the luxury of access to capital and a healthy professional network committed to their success.

Here's where multistate operator and M4MM partner Curaleaf comes in as a critical team player as we diversify the face of the industry. As the largest retail dispensary in the U.S., it is perfectly positioned to welcome suppliers that have historically been out-priced and out-manned, and even outlawed for participating in the industry as legacy dispensaries.
